The University of North Carolina's latest basketball recruit has Peninsula roots.
Justin Watts, a guard from Jordan High School in Durham, N.C., signed with the Tar Heels on Tuesday. He is the son of Gregory Watts, the Peninsula District's No. 3 scorer in 1976 as a senior at Menchville.
A three-year starter at Jordan, Watts averaged 25 points per game last season. He attracted interest from the likes of Stanford, Illinois, South Carolina, Michigan and Boston College.
But Watts said UNC coach Roy Williams urged him to wait, and Monday Williams offered a scholarship during Watts' campus visit.
Watts then narrowed his choices to Stanford and UNC before signing his letter of intent. Watts' dad averaged 20.8 points in 1976, third in the district behind Phoebus' Boo Williams and Hampton's Art Jones.
