Tar Heels coach thinks basketball, deals with vertigo
CHAPEL HILL — Midseason or offseason, charting free throws or distance to the next green, there’s one thing that never changes for North Carolina men’s basketball coach Roy Williams.
“I go to bed every night thinking about basketball,” he said Wednesday, addressing several mid-summer issues.
Williams recently spent 10 days in six different towns on the recruiting trail. Earlier this summer, he went to Hawaii to speak at a high school function.
But the way the past season ended continues to be an irritation.
“You might have heard Coach (Dean) Smith say about me is that he worried most about me because I took losses so hard as an assistant,” Williams said.
This week, personal health has become an issue. Williams has vertigo, a state of dizziness, and is moving extremely slow.
Williams said he has dealt with vertigo previously, though not since July 2005. He hopes to return to recruiting Saturday.
While Williams has lost his sense of balance, he still had his sense of humor. He chided coaches who have abused some recruiting privileges, such as text messaging, and the rules ramifications that have followed.
“He texted more people in one day than I have my whole life,” he said, referring to a report regarding Florida football coach Urban Meyer.
The Tar Heels’ 2006-07 basketball season ended in overtime in an NCAA Tournament regional final against Georgetown.
“I thought it was very successful,” the coach said, assessing the season as a whole. “It didn’t get where everyone wanted it to be.”
Williams said the final eight minutes against Georgetown was the first time that North Carolina’s freshmen and sophomores looked like underclassmen on the court.
“If we had won that game so many people wouldn’t be saying so many bad things about our entire league.”
With that hanging above his team, he said he would like the Tar Heels to play better next season. He said that’s always a coach’s goal.
Two Tar Heels — rising sophomores Deon Thompson and Wayne Ellington — are playing for U.S. national teams this summer. He said the additional game time should help them.
But such activities aren’t suited for all players.
Ty Lawson, who worked at Lebron James’ camp, isn’t in a formal summer program. Williams said the rising sophomore point guard doesn’t lack in confidence, so using a summer to build that area wasn’t necessary for Ty Lawson.
Meanwhile, rising junior center Tyler Hansbrough is going about summer workouts with regular passion, Williams said.
“Tyler Hansbrough’s goals are not to practice two hours a day,” the coach said, referring to typical schedules for some organized summer programs.
In Tyler Hansbrough’s case, he does more than that.
