Jackets' Future is Now
ATLANTA - The arrival of Thaddeus Young and Javaris Crittenton was supposed to make Georgia Tech a lock for this season's NCAA Tournament.
The Yellow Jackets aren't a sure thing for the NCAAs yet, but the star freshmen showed just how good the Yellow Jackets can be.
Young scored a career-high 25 points and Crittenton played through nagging ankle sprain to lead his team past No. 8 North Carolina 84-77 before a capacity crowd at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.
The win is Georgia Tech's sixth in eight games and likely puts the Jackets in position to claim an at-large NCAA bid with a victory Sunday over Boston College.
Georgia Tech's record is 19-10 overall, 7-8 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
Young played the best game of his young career.
He was dominant defensively as well as on offense, setting a career-high with four steals and showing the quick hands and instincts of a veteran.
Javaris Crittenton, meanwhile, limped his way to another solid performance.
The point guard injured his right ankle Saturday against Virginia and came down awkwardly early in the second half.
Even with the bad wheel he helped Georgia Tech stave off a late North Carolina rally.
The Tar Heels cut a 14-point deficit to four with under two minutes to go before Crittenton steadied his team with deft ball- handling and free throw shooting.
Javaris Crittenton finished with 13 points and 11 assists, his second double-double of the season. Guard Anthony Morrow added 18 points, 13 in the first half. He made four 3-point shots.
North Carolina, which lost for the third time in five games, got 38 points and 15 rebounds from the frontcourt of Tyler Hansbrough and Brandan Wright.
The Tar Heel guards struggled, though, with Reyshawn Terry making just one shot and point guard Ty Lawson two.
