MidWest Regional
Wisconsin proved to be the best team in the Big Ten by taking the regular-season and tournament titles.
But the NCAA tournament selection committee didn't show the Big Ten much love, so the Badgers are the third seed in the Midwest regional.
The good news for the Wisconsin Badgers (29-4) is the top-seeded team in the regional is Kansas (31-3), the national fourth seed.
Coach Bo Ryan's forte is defense, a very important commodity if the Badgers make the regional final and face Bill Self's
Kansas Jayhawks, the nation's highest-scoring team.
Wisconsin's first-round opponent Thursday in Omaha is Cal State Fullerton (24-8). The Titans are making their first NCAA tournament appearance since 1978.
After that it gets much more difficult because sixth-seeded Southern California of the powerful Pacific-10 and second-seeded Georgetown, the Big East's regular-season champion and tournament runner-up, are lurking in the Badgers' half of the bracket.
Georgetown has the nucleus back from the team that went to the Final Four last year. This season the Hoyas (27-5) lead the nation in field-goal defense, and they're 6-0 in games decided by three or fewer points.
Wisconsin doesn't have firepower comparable to that of the Hoyas or a player with the talent of 7-foot-2-inch Roy Hibbert, who had 25 points and 13 rebounds in a rout of West Virginia in the Big East tournament.
The Midwest regional also features two freshmen phenoms in O.J. Mayo of USC Trojans and 6-10 Michael Beasley of Kansas State, and they'll meet in the first round.
Who's hot: Clemson upset Duke in the Atlantic Coast Conference semifinals and gave North Carolina a game before losing in Sunday's final. Davidson (26-6) has won 22 straight, the longest winning streak in major-college ball.
Who's not: After winning its first 16 games, Vanderbilt is going into the tournament with a 26-7 record.
Cinderella fella: Midmajor Kent State might make waves.
Projected regional champion: Kansas.
